Carmel Yahl
General Manager; Mission Leader
Since February 2023, Carmel has been serving as the General Manager and Mission Leader of Mary MacKillop Place, making her mark as the first General Manager who is not a Sister of St Joseph.
With a heartfelt passion for Saint Mary MacKillop and her enduring legacy, Carmel brings a wealth of expertise in business, workplace culture, identity, and mission to her leadership of this sacred site.
Carmel’s career includes a pivotal role at Australian Catholic University, where she served as Executive Manager in the Office of the Vice President. In this position, she was responsible for Catholic-related operations, encompassing identity and mission, community engagement, church relations, staff formation and campus ministry.
Before her time at ACU, Carmel held various impactful roles across ministry and business sectors. She was the Business Manager for the Catholic Adult Education Centre for the Archdiocese of Sydney and served as Mission Leader in youth ministries, where she championed youth engagement and leadership.
With over 20 years of professional experience in the not-for-profit, educational, retail, and hospitality sectors, Carmel holds a degree in Management and a Master’s in Business Administration.
Her diverse experiences and dedication to mission-driven work uniquely position her to guide Mary MacKillop Place into an exciting new chapter, continuing the important story of service and community that Mary MacKillop inspired.
Terrance Clout
Chair
Terry is a highly respected leader with extensive experience across public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. As Chair of the Mary MacKillop Place Board, Terry brings a wealth of expertise, having previously served as Chair of the Mary MacKillop Foundation Board and Deputy Chair of the Mary MacKillop Today Board. Currently, he is also Deputy Chair of the Southern NSW Local Health District Board.
With a distinguished 30-year career in the NSW Public Health Sector, including 15 years as CEO of Area Health Services/ Local Health Districts, Terry has worked with all levels of government and communities and held multiple senior positions in the NSW Public Sector. He has led major NSW Public Health organisations with up to 20,000 staff and a $2.1 billion budget and his work has influenced significant health reforms which have improved outcomes for communities across metropolitan, regional and rural NSW.
Terry was awarded the Public Service Medal in the 2021 Australia Day Honours List in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the provision of health services to the community, particularly in the areas of mental health, oral health, child protection, domestic violence, sexual assault services, Aboriginal health services and rural health services.
Terry’s commitment to social justice, universal education, reducing disadvantage and fostering values based ethical leadership is evident in his professional and personal life. He and his wife, Jennifer, are active members of their local parish in Wollongong where they are involved in numerous voluntary initiatives. Outside of work, Terry enjoys singing in a local male choir and spending time in his extensive garden with his family, including their three adult children and three grandchildren.
Sr Louise Reeves RSJ
Non-Executive Director
Louise is a Sister of Saint Joseph and a member of the Congregational Leadership Team. She has served on NFP boards involved with education, aged care, community services and NGOs as well as Catholic Church Insurance and Mercy Community Services. Louise is currently a Member of the Emerging Futures Collaborative Ltd which assists religious congregations in Australia and New Zealand. She is a Director on the Board of Mary MacKillop Place at North Sydney.
Louise’s professional background includes education and law. Some years were spent in Senegal, West Africa, and Tanzania, East Africa working in educational and pastoral initiatives. On return to Australia, she studied law and worked at the Legal Aid Commission in the field of human rights, social security, asylum seekers, and various community legal centres assisting families seeking legal assistance with immigration law.
Working with chairs, CEOs and directors of the congregational boards is a key area of interest and commitment.
Outside of service, her interests include bushwalking, learning languages, music and reading.
Sr Therese Carroll RSJ
Non-Executive Director; Chair, Board Formation Committee
Therese is a Sister of Saint Joseph. Her current ministries include working with religious congregations facilitating chapters, assemblies and other gatherings, spiritual direction and retreats, pastoral professional supervision, leadership development and formation for religious life. She has many years of experience in aged care/health management and governance including Chair of Catholic Health Australia.
Therese’s favourite places are where the ocean meets the mountains, and she loves to experience creation as a way of refreshment and relaxation. As an experienced midwife, this metaphor continues to ground and inform her work and life.
Her qualifications include RN, CM, Dip Teach Nursing (SCAE), BHSc (Sturt Uni Bathurst), MEd (ACU), MMgtCmty (Uni Technology, Sydney), MA Theology (CIS, Sydney), MAICD, Pastoral Supervision, Member AAOS, Spiritual Direction, Online Benedictine Abbey, Colorado, Member ANSD.
Emma Rossi
Non-Executive Director; Member, Strategic Planning Advisory Committee
Emma is a seasoned journalist and media professional with nearly two decades of experience reporting for news and current affairs on TV, both in Australia and overseas. As a foreign correspondent, reporter and news presenter, Emma’s work has taken her across the globe and into the homes of audiences around the world.
Emma holds a Master’s in Management from Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM), a BA in Communications from Charles Sturt University, and a Certificate of Clinical Pastoral Education from St Vincent’s Health Australia (Sydney).
Emma is the host of Inclusive Agenda, a popular podcast on radio 2RPH, and regularly volunteers as a newsreader for the station, which has been serving Sydney for over 40 years.
Her extensive career includes nearly 12 years in media and communications roles for key Australian regulators, the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) and the ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority). Emma became a leading voice in e-safety, appearing in numerous television and media interviews as an advocate for the online protection of women and children. Her national leadership in improving online safety for women fleeing abuse has been instrumental in creating safer digital environments.
Passionate about making a difference, Emma has been an Australia Day Ambassador since 2013 and co-founded Mary’s House, a refuge supporting women and children escaping domestic violence. Her commitment to community extends to rural Australia, where she serves as an ambassador and founding board director of Active Farmers, a group fitness initiative transforming mental and physical health in farming communities.
The ninth of ten children, Emma has a lively sense of family and, despite “letting the team down” by having only four of her own, she’s passed on her passion for volunteerism and advocacy to them. In fact, she and her daughter once cycled across Cambodia together to help free women and girls from sex slavery.
Peter Robertson
Non-Executive Director; Chair, Buildings Preservation, Conservation and Maintenance Advisory Committee.
As the dynamic Chief Executive Officer of the Darling Harbour Live (DHL) Consortium, Peter is at the helm of Sydney’s premier event venue, the International Convention Centre (ICC Sydney) where he expertly oversees the performance of key partners – including operator ASM Global and facility management contractor Spotless, as well as all retailers at the ICC Sydney.
With a wealth of experience in public-private partnership (PPP) management, Peter has been instrumental at every stage – from the initial bid through construction to handover to the operators and ongoing management through the operational phase. He understands that effective project safety, risk management, and quality control are vital for success, and he fosters open communication across all levels of the project team and stakeholders.
Before joining the DHL team in December 2015, Peter honed his construction expertise both in Australia and overseas. His impressive track record includes senior roles in several successful PPP projects, including serving as General Manager for the Aspire Schools SEQ PPP Project in Queensland, Operations Manager and Lead Building Engineering and Services Coordinator for the New Royal Adelaide Hospital in South Australia, and Project Manager for the Headquarters Joint Operation Command in Bungendore, NSW.
As an advocate for ongoing education and mentoring, Peter employs an open management style that is essential to the success of PPPs. He holds multiple qualifications, including degrees in Engineering, a Master of Management, an MBA, and a Master of Engineering Science.
Angela Wagland
Non-Executive Director; Chair, Finance Risk and Audit Committee
Angela Wagland is a seasoned executive with more than 20 years of experience in C-Suite and non-executive roles. She has a proven track record in delivering stakeholder value, managing complex mergers and acquisitions, and overseeing financial governance and risk management across diverse business units and regions.
Currently, Angela serves as a Non-Executive Director and Chair of the Finance Risk and Audit Committee at Mary MacKillop Place. Previously, she spent over 13 years as Group CFO at Foodco Group, a global retail food franchisor known for brands like Muffin Break and Jamaica Blue. Recently, she has taken on the role of CFO for Harris Farm Markets.
Outside of work, Angela enjoys trail running, hiking, and capturing beautiful moments through photography.
Anna Howarth
Non-Executive Director; Chair, Strategic Planning Advisory Committee
Anna is an experienced leader and strategist with a career spanning the corporate, government, and non-profit sectors. She first connected with the Board of Mary MacKillop Place in 2022 as a consultant, helping to develop a three-year strategic plan.
Currently, Anna works as the Director of Strategy for the National Catholic Education Commission, where she focuses on initiatives to improve educational outcomes in Catholic education.
Over the years, she has held diverse roles, including consulting to the Department of Education and leading customer relationships at High Resolves, a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering young people.
Anna spent 14 years at Microsoft Australia, where she held senior roles, including working with Microsoft Philanthropies, partnering with organisations to support disadvantaged youth across Australia. She is a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion and has led Reconciliation Action Plans for Microsoft Australia and High Resolves. She also served on Microsoft’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee for 10 years.
Outside of her professional life, Anna enjoys spending time with family and friends, or heading to the beach or the park with her son, who loves playing soccer.
