The Sisters of Saint Joseph at Mary MacKillop Place

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart were founded in Penola, South Australia in 1866 by Mary MacKillop and her co-founder, English priest Julian Tenison Woods.

The spirituality of the Sisters is grounded in the lived experience of daily life.

From the time of their foundation, the Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart have lived among the people, sharing their daily lives and responding to the needs of the time.

The Sisters are engaged in both pastoral work and professional roles which include teaching, administration, social services, law, psychology, nursing, aged care, community development, adult education and support for new arrivals in Australia and New Zealand.

To learn more about the history, work and legacy of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Mary MacKillop and Fr Julian Tenison Woods, you’re invited to view an interactive historical timeline.

The Sisters works at Mary MacKillop Place.

Today the Sisters are actively involved in many areas of Mary MacKillop Place, through Pastoral Care and Chapel Ministry, education and advocacy.

They are active in supporting our community through our website by bringing the Prayer Intentions of those who leave them into Saint Mary’s care.

The Sisters also have a prominent presence in the Mary MacKillop Memorial Chapel. Here they offer pastoral support by being a “listening ear” and praying for anyone who needs it.

In our Gift Shop and Café you will also find handmade gifts created on site by the Sisters. You’ll find cushions, towels, pin cushions, carry bags and more, which are all available for purchase.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Sacred Heart continue God’s mission by immersing themselves in the midst of life to empower others and bring hope.

Mary MacKillop Spirituality Ministry

In addition to Mary MacKillop Place, the Sisters of Saint Joseph offer spirituality centres across Australia. These centres provide a range of programs, reflective spaces, heritage centres, museums, conference spaces and accommodation.

Your support of the Sisters of Saint Joseph helps us carry forward a legacy of compassion, education, and service at Mary MacKillop Place.

“To you all then, my dear Sisters, I wish a very happy Feast.”
