The following courses from the NSW Board of Studies History syllabus have been linked with studying Mary MacKillop for students in Years 7 – 10 (Stages 4 and 5).

Stage 4 Mandatory Courses

Topic 1: Investigating History

Stage 4 Objectives:

  • Develops skills to undertake the process of historical inquiry
  • Develops skills to communicate their understanding of history

Stage 4 Outcomes:

  • Identifies major periods of historical time and sequences people and events within specific periods of time
  • Identifies the meaning, purpose and context of historical sources
  • Draws conclusions about the usefulness of sources as evidence in an inquiry
  • Selects and uses appropriate oral, written and other forms, including ICT, to communicate effectively about the past
Topic 4: Optional Study – The Shaping of the Modern World

Stage 4 Objectives:

  • Develops knowledge and understanding of the nature of history, past societies and periods and their legacy
  • Develops skills to undertake the process of historical inquiry

Stage 4 Outcomes:

  • Describes and explains the nature of history, the main features of past societies and periods and their legacy
  • Identifies the meaning, purpose and context of historical sources
  • Identifies different contexts, perspectives and interpretations of the past
  • Locate, selects and organises relevant information from a number of sources, including ICT, to conduct basic historical research

Stages 4 Elective Courses

Topic 1: Constructing History

(Biography, Heritage and Conservation and Museum and/or Archives Studies)

Stage 4 Objectives:

  • Develops a knowledge and understanding of history and historical inquiry
  • Develops skills to undertake the processes of historical inquiry

Stage 4 Outcomes:

  • Explains the nature of history, heritage, archaeology and the methods of historical inquiry
  • Recognises the ways in which historical meanings can be constructed through a range of media
  • Identifies the meaning, purpose and contact of historical sources and examines the usefulness of sources as evidence in an inquiry
  • Identifies different contexts, perspectives and interpretations of the past
  • Locates, selects and organises relevant information from a number of sources, including ICT, to undertake historical inquiry

Stage 5 Elective Courses

Topic 1: Constructing History

(Biography, Heritage and Conservation and Museum and/or Archives Studies)

Stage 5 Objectives:

  • Develops a knowledge and understanding of history and historical inquiry
  • Develops skills to undertake the processes of historical inquiry

Stage 5 Outcomes:

  • Applies an understanding of history, heritage, archaeology and the methods of historical inquiry
  • examines the ways in which historical meanings can be constructed through a range of media
  • Identifies, comprehends and evaluates historical sources and uses them appropriately in an historical inquiry
  • Explains different contexts, perspectives and interpretations of the past
  • Locates, selects and organises relevant historical information from a number of sources, including ICT, to undertake historical inquiry

English

Students will enhance their learning about Mary MacKillop and the Sisters of Saint Joseph through studying, responding to and composing a wide variety of texts.

Students will therefore, develop skills, knowledge and understanding in order to:

  • Speak, listen, read, write, view and represent
  • Use language and communicate appropriately and effectively
  • Think in ways that are imaginative, interpretive and critical
  • Express themselves and their relationships with others in the world
  • Learn and reflect on their learning through their study of English

These skills, knowledge and understanding can be used in the classroom while studying Mary MacKillop, the Sisters of Saint Joseph or a current theme e.g. human rights, social justice etc.


Personal Development

The NSW Board of Studies PDHPE 7-10 syllabus may also be linked with students’ learning about Mary MacKillop and the Sisters of Saint Joseph.

The following stage statements from the Personal Development area can be integrated with many aspects of Mary’s life. The Sisters of Saint Joseph continue to live Mary’s dreams and mission, ‘Never see a need without doing something about it.’ We are all challenged to live this dream.

Stage 4 Students

Students have developed an understanding of the influences on their sense of self as they make the transition to adolescence.They identify challenges and opportunities they may experience at this stage of their lives. They enhance their capacity to manage these challenges as they identify and select strategies that promote connectedness, develop interpersonal communication skills and establish support networks of both adults and peers.

Stage 5 Students

Students explain the relationship between a sense of self, and health and wellbeing. They identify strategies that can support their own and others’ sense of self. They identify challenges and opportunities they may experience at this stage of their lives and continue to develop and practise strategies that strengthen their resilience. They accept responsibility for their role in maintaining relationships and demonstrate the ability to form relationships that are inclusive, caring and satisfying. Students affirm and celebrate diversity and challenge forms of discrimination, harassment and vilification.


Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama

Educators may provide students with a variety of creative learning environments and experiences from the NSW Board of Studies 7-10 syllabus.

Students can reflect on their experiences, interpret and represent their ideas through visual arts, music, dance and drama.
